SHEROES Bios: Jean Loo, Superhero Me
SHEROES Bios is a collection of 12 selected stories taken from “ULTRAordinary SHEROES”, a collaborative project by The HEART Enterprise, Up Your Game Community, and Our Unique Stories to celebrate International Women’s Day 2019.
So many photographers, artists, writers and performers see the world as it is. Their work’s purpose is to capture snippets in time, momentary slices of existence without attachment. Their part in the solution is to raise awareness with at most a personal reaction or reflection on the issue they portray. Jean however, in her role as a community artist, decided to create solutions to the issues she observed.
Her commitment to social missions snowballed in scope and depth. Jean founded Superhero Me, an inclusive arts movement that empowers children of all abilities through the arts, social mixing, and purposeful programmes.
Blending the power of art with her commitment to inclusivity, Jean strives towards her vision of a world in which all children have differently-abled friends at school. Jean is currently working on an arts festival to be held at a special school where families of typically developing children will have the opportunity to visit the school and attend guided art tours.
Jean’s commitment to her vision extends to young adults to whom she imparts the key principle that a photographer’s role is a responsibility, not a right. One is obliged to act to improve the situation that one observes behind the camera by thoroughly understanding the community one is working with. Having done that, it is incumbent upon them to present a strong social voice in their work.
Jean also works with groups of seniors and enable them to participate in the Silver Arts Festival. Based on her conviction that inclusivity can be achieved in fun, meaningful ways, Jean’s creativity and encouraging spirit inspire many who work alongside her.
Jean’s story first appeared at the ULTRAordinary SHEROES event organised by The HEART Enterprise and DISTRii Singapore on 8 March 2019.
